Monday 08-09 - Walking tour.

We got up and went for some coffee. Then on to a walking tour. The company that did the excellent walking tour in Amsterdam also did tours in Madrid. So we went towards the large plaaza of Puerta del Sol to meet them. There was an American guide and an English guide, we picked the latter. We made the right choice. He was very funny and cared about the tour. We started at the bear and tree statue.

To explain the old monarchy he got 5 of the guys up to be the kings. Steve and Josh stepped up. Josh was Charles the second, who unfortunately (but hilariously) was severely inbred. We all had a good laugh at the boys´ expense.

I didn´t know much about the whole political situation in Spain 1936-1975. Only a little about Franco. Eddie (the guide) explained everything really well though. He gave me a better appreciastion for Spanish history. We learnt about the statue built by the lazy king.

The lazy kingĀ“s statue, pretty impressive

We hit the palace and the cathedral. Luckily they were facing each other.

We stopped for lunch at a chain restaurant. It specialised in tiny sammichs. Between us, Josh and I picked 7 out of their 100 various and delicious rolls. We had prawn, tuna, chicken, tortilla, salmon and duck. With fresh chips in the middle.

Back on the tour we passed the letters district, dedicated to writing and novels. We passed Cervantes´ house. As we went we kept seeing statues and plaques surrounding the Franco years. Everywhere there were reminders.

Tribute to victims of politics

We ended the tour in the afternoon, sitting at a park. This is where he tackled the sadder and more serious part of the tour, but it was all things worth knowing. I´m glad I tracked this tour down again, it really is the best tour around. We gave Eddie 20 euro between the three of us. Then Josh and I decided to take Steve to the amazing Chocolate and churros. It was great like I remembered.

Very great.

Close up, heavenly food

In the evening we decided to get Chinese. We followed the directions given to us but managed to get lost in the backstreets of Madrid. We had to go back to the desk and get the directions drawn on a map so we could actually find the one chinese place in the whole area.

Beef, bamboo shoots and mushroom

Steve had to leave early the next morning so we said our fare wells before we went to bed. I dreamed of london.
